Nutritionist

There is no question that we are what we eat. The body requires food in sufficient quantity and quality for growth, maintenance, repair and energy. The food we eat must include:

- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Fats
- Minerals
- Vitamins

Eating is more than just the intake of food, it is an experience that is both social and cultural. People find it difficult to go to a nutritionist. They are terrified that the nutritionist will stop them from eating food that is considered fattening.

The main aim of the nutritionist is to give adequate advice on how to live in a healthy way. A good diet is synonymous with good health. A healthy and varied diet can help in maintaining a healthy body weight (Body Mass Index (BMI): 20-25kg/m2) and reduces the risks of certain diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, hypertension and anorexia. These diseases are considered to be very common and are on the increase in the Western world.

A healthy diet will:

- assist in the prevention of these diseases,
- may prolong the onset of such diseases.

Therefore one must alter certain types of foods. A healthy diet is based on the following food groups:

- Bread, pasta, potatoes and rice
- Vegetables and fruits
- Meat, fish and eggs
- Milk and milk products

This list is far from being complete. One also requires regular exercise, plenty of water intake and fresh air.
